Our Guided, Interpretive Rainforest Nature Walk into El Yunque National rainforest are considered by many to be the best guided tours in puerto rico!  On this guided rainforest tour you will enjoy Puerto Rico’s rainforest waterfall known as “La Mina” waterfall as it is one of the highlights of Big Tree Trail!

Tour Specifications:

Trail Head: “Big Tree Trail” – Trail Length: 1.7 miles round trip – Altitudes Above Sea Level: Start at – 1,860′ down to 1,608′ at La Mina waterfall – Moderate / Difficult walk – Trail: man-made & natural – Two hours on trail time.

Hardwood Trees, Some of the Oldest and Largest Trees in the forest, Streams & Rivers, Flora & Fauna, Scenic Views, 70′ Waterfall called La Mina!  Your day will start with a relaxing bus ride or drive via rental car to Big Tree Trailhead, while driving up to the tour location enjoy seeing the natural wonders from the bus or rental car based on your needs!

Upon arriving at our tour location, you will meet your two, CPR First Aid certified guides, here the group will be checked in, receive pre-walk safety orientation of the tour that they are about to embark on.  After our orientation, the group will sign waiver releases and receive a lightweight backpack with the following inside:

  • One canvas backpacks per guest.
  • One fresh Clean dry towel.
  • Snack package with a cold bottle of water (water bottle sealed).
  • (Backpacks and towels must be returned at the end of the tour).

At this point, we will start our guided nature walk along a man-made and natural trail system known as Big Tree Trail.  Once under the canopy of Puerto Rico’s rainforest, we will leave the world behind, cool fresh air will take over your senses as sights and sounds of the wind and water relax your mind!  Your guide will be giving information along the walk relating to the following:

  • Annual amounts of rainfall.
  • Tree and plant life and their existence in the forest.
  • Birds, Spiders, insects and small mammals that may be seen in the forest.
  • Rivers, waterfalls and their aquatic life.
  • Elevations and temperatures.
  • The history behind the rainforest.

As the rainforest nature walk progresses, we will see and hear many beautiful sights and sounds, such as a crystal clear rivers that flow thru the rocks and trees along the walking path. Once we have reached our breakpoint at a fabulous waterfall called La Mina the group will stop and have the opportunity to relax under the majestic canopy of the rainforest as they enjoy snacks and cold water supplied in their backpacks, while relaxing with a beautiful view of La Mina Waterfall.  After our 25 to 30-minute break has ended, the group will start their return walk out of nature’s wonder better known as the El Yunque National forest!

El Yunque Tours Supplies the following:

  • Two CPR First Aid Certified guides per 25 guests.
  • First Aid kits and radio communications.
  • Lightweight canvas backpack (one per guest).
  • Fresh clean towel (one per guest).
  • Commentary of the Flora and Fauna as well as the history of the rainforest.
  • Pre-Packaged Snacks and Cold Bottled Waters.

Suggested Apparel:

  • T-shirts lightweight jackets, shorts, and swimming apparel. (Change of dry clothes).
  • Shoes – Walking boots, high top shoes or hiking boots.
  • Flip Flops or Strap on water shoes for wading into the waterfall.  (Please be informed that a change of shoes may be needed, this is a nature walk along natural trails, mud and water may be encountered during this walk).

Things to Bring:

  • Insect repellent.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Plastic bag or bags for your wet or muddy items.
  • Cameras 35mm or video (bring at your own risk).
  • Slip-on water shoes for the wade into the waterfall do to rocks in this area.
  • Raincoats, Ponchos as it is a Rainforest!
  • Change of Dry Clothes for after the tour!

Things to Leave Behind:

  • Jewelry, watches, bracelets, wallets anything you do not want to loose.
  • No radios media players, noise – makers (anything that may disturb the surrounding environment and or other guests).
  • No Smoking or fire of any kind will be permitted.
  • No alcohol or consumption of alcohol during said activity.

Requirements to Participate:

  • Moderate/Difficult tour (guest, must be athletic to be active on this tour).
  • No children under 6 years of age.
  • This activity is not suggested for people that have had open heart surgery, back problems, knee surgery or ladies pregnant at any time in their term due to the risk of falling.

Trail Available for the Above Activity:

  • Big Tree trail to La Mina Falls,  Departing from Big Tree Trail parking lot, (This is a Moderate/Difficult – athletic, Nature Walk.  This activity is given on a man-made & natural trail).

Cancellation Policy:

  • Any cancellation or changes to your reservation must be notified with no less than 48 hours prior to activity date.
  • No shows to the tour without cancellation notice will incur in full charge of the activity.

Transportation

  • Tour offers optional hotel pick-up and drop-off at San Juan hotels.  Please note San Juan is approximately 1.5 hours from the tour site, based on traffic and in route guest pickup and returns.  There is an eight passenger minimum for the transportation to be offered. Transportation Cost is $25.00 per passenger round trip additional to tour rate.

  • New Year day, Three King’s Day (January 6th), 4th of July, 25th of July, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve. Notice we close from Holy Thursday until the following Tuesday due to difficult access to the area such as heavy traffic, extreme delays, and no parking areas.

Rainforest Nature Walk to Waterfall Adventure Step by Step Tour Description:

Puerto Rico’s rainforest and its walking trail systems are very user-friendly with plenty of signage and routing info so anyone can enjoy the rainforest on their own.  However, having a knowledgeable guide during your El Yunque rainforest tour to show you where mother nature and its wonders hide is worth the extra effort on your visit to Puerto Rico!

Your day will start with a relaxing ride to the top of Puerto Rico’s rainforest known as the El Yunque!  After viewing the natural wonders from the bus or your rental car, you will arrive at our drop point where El Yunque Tours guides will start your guided rainforest tour into the interior of Puerto Rico’s rainforest.  El Yunque tours guided nature walk will start by meeting your two guides (CPR and First Aid certified), and here the group will receive a pre-walk orientation of the tour that they are about to embark on.

After the orientation, the group will sign waiver releases and receive a lightweight backpack with the following inside: One canvas backpack per guest, Swiss Gear, One clean dry towel, Snack package with cold bottle of water (water bottle sealed), (Backpacks, towels must be returned at the end of the tour).

At this point, we will start our hike along a natural rainforest trail as we hike into the El Yunque National forest and leave the world behind.  The cool fresh air will take over your senses and the sights and sounds of the wind and water will relax your mind.  Your guide will be giving an interpretation of the natural area and its flora & fauna along the guided nature walk covering the following:

  • Annual amounts of rainfall.
  • Hurricanes in Puerto Rico and their role in the rainforest.
  • Tree and plant life and their existence in Puerto Rico’s rainforest.
  • Birds, spiders, insects and small mammals that may be seen in the El Yunque rainforest.
  • The aquatic life in the rivers and waterfalls of El Yunque National Forest.
  • Elevations and temperatures.
  • History of  Puerto Rico’s rainforest.

As the hike progresses, we will see and hear many beautiful sights and sounds, such as a crystal clear rivers that flow through the rocks and trees along the hiking trail.  Once we have reached our breakpoint at a fabulous El Yunque waterfall called La Mina waterfall, the group will stop and have the opportunity to relax under the majestic canopy of the rainforest as they enjoy snacks and cold water supplied in their backpacks.  Here your guides will give you the opportunity to sit in on commentary about La Mina waterfall held shore side, feel the cooling mist, enjoy photo time to gather your great shots, or just relax to sounds of rushing water passing through the rocks, if weather permits and conditions are safe, you will be able to wade into and get under the waterfall!

After our 30-minute break has ended, our group will start the return guided nature walk out of the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Forestry system and our natural wonder better known as El Yunque National forest!

El Yunque Tours Include the Following:

Two CPR, First Aid certified guides per 25 guests, First Aid equipment, and radio communications, Lightweight canvas backpack (one per guest), Clean dry towel (one per guest), Interpretation of the flora and fauna of El Yunque National Forest as well as the history of the Puerto Rican rainforest, 8oz. cold water bottle and pre-packaged snack – (Assorted cereal bars), One bottle and snack package per-guest supplied in the backpack.

Requirements to Participate:

No – Children under 6 – 6 through 17 with adult supervision – No – Alcohol or consumption of alcohol during the tour – No – Smoking on or during the tour or within the El Yunque rainforest.  This Tour is not suggested for people that have had back problems or knee surgery, Athletic activity (guest, must be athletic to be active on this tour).

*This tour is not suggested for people that have had back problems or knee surgery, Ladies, six months & further along in their pregnancy are not allowed due to safety concerns, This rainforest tour is not suggested for people with any heart conditions, open heart surgeries, heart murmurs, taking high blood pressure medication, asthmatic, diabetic or has had recent surgeries that may make it difficult to hike at high elevations, hike up and down trails, or staircases for up to two hours.

What To Bring & What to Leave Behind:

To bring:

Lightweight clothing and a change of dry clothes for the ride back to the hotel, as it is a “RAINFOREST” it could rain during the tour. If you sunburn easily, wear lightweight clothing white in color, long sleeves to help protect from the sun. Towel/Towels as needed to dry off once back from the tour. Lightweight hiking shoes, hiking boots, sandals or strap-on water shoes which work great at the rocky entry into the waterfall. Hats, sunglasses as needed to protect you against the sun! Sunscreen 50 SPF plus. Waterproof cameras, cameras (Bring at your own risk).

Leave behind:

The following are only suggestions!  Digital cameras or video if not waterproof, it does rain regularly.  Paper documentation important to your vacation, passports, boarding passes, birth certificates or any others that you do not want to get wet.  Large sums of money, expensive or important jewelry, anything that is looped, loose or dangling.  Anything that you would not want to lose, leave behind in a rental car or aboard the tour bus.

If you choose to bring items not recommended, El Yunque Tours will not be held responsible for any items you choose to take!
